All the major US religious medal manufacturers gold plate, silver plate, or spray their medals with lacquer varnish (that grey look). You should never polish lacquered medals, the ones with a gray or dark look because the polish will bond with the varnish. Buffing off all the varnish is near impossible. We order some medals from the manufactuers RAW (no lacquer) and we buff and polish them until they are gorgeous. In addition to just buffing we change the shape of the medal round places where they are sharp. It is physically hard to do, and can only do about 2 a day. These have RWMG in the item number.     Others we attempt to buff off the lacquer but we can never get it all off.     What size medal to select, the finish and other information          Most manufacturers use weak jump rings.
